![]() I think that I will start off with the Synology and see how I get on with it. I tried this last night on a Bluray with digital download that I had purchased & voila it goes perfectly onto Plex and plays back without fail on my PS4, without the need of using dodgy download sites for the film. Another thing I have found is that with digital downloads like Ultraviolet that normally cannot be played on the PS4, is that software that I purchased actually allows me to record from Ultraviolet as a WMV file, which then I can encode using handbrake to a smaller file. Yes I see what you mean about the transcoding, tuns out that I am able to play all my files without the need of the transcoding box to be clicked within Plex which comes in great use. There is also the option of installing a nvidia graphics cards card to assist in transcoding which the synology can't do, Remember that transcoding is extremely heavy on CPU, the DS216J you mentioned is a group 2 device and can't cope with any sort of transcoding according the Synology,Ī Gen 8 onwards Microserver should be able to handle transcoding up to 720p and maybe 1080p depending on the bitrate. With Fire TV + Kodi and on my Samsung TV's built in DNLA client which are both Ethernet connected, I am playing back UHD files that are 50GB in size no problem.īesides, if you are using DNLA, Plex can't do any transcoding as its doesn't know the destination codec support, its basically a file server. If you are using firestick as the client then I haven't come across any file format that Kodi can't play back including high bit rate 1080p. You only need to worry about transcoding if the your device doesn't have a codec for the video stream or your have a network bandwidth issue. Yes you are correct there, I just originally wan't sure if my devices were able to transcode without Plex doing transcoding on the fly & just have Plex as a server with library without it transcoding. I could be misremembering but I think the Synology devices have a Plex plugin, anyway, so you could still run with that. Kodi does cover art and so does serviio DNLA server I believe ![]() Must admit that I do love the library function on Plex, so I get the cover of all my media, so is nice to look at when scrolling through on my Bluray player and PS4 without the need of taking it out of the Bluray cabinet. That is great as all my devices are DLNA compliant. ![]() There is also library functionality within Kodi if that's a feature that's of particular interest to you. As I said, I use Kodi running on two Fire TV boxes, and it works great. As long as you have playback devices that can work with a DLNA compliant server, you're good to go with a Synology device. So will look again at the DS216J as it can be got at a reasonable price and have heard some good things about the reliability of the WD Red drives, which can also be got at a reasonable price. I then looked at the DS216J, but was told that it wasn't able to send video over to playback devices, so it looks like that the person that told me was inaccurate. I was originally considering the Synology DS416J but decided against it because of the initial outlay. I have two Fire TV boxes and use Kodi to stream all manner of audio and video from the NAS all over the house via ethernet/wifi. It's small, quiet, power efficient, and supports pretty much everything you could want. I switched to a Synology NAS and haven't looked back. I recycled an older PC into one, and used it for a while, but it was bulky, and uses much more power than a dedicated NAS device. This is a security release to fight the CVE-2021-44228 vulnerability caused by Log4j library.ĭownload: Serviio 2.2.1 | 124.I wouldn't bother building a NAS PC.
